Designing a book for an artist is far more than organizing images in sequence. It requires understanding how their work is constructed, how it relates to time, space, and those who observe it. In the case of Gabriel Wickbold, one of Brazil's most internationally recognized contemporary artists and photographers, this challenge demanded transforming a body of work marked by visual intensity, experimentation, and multiple languages into an editorial experience capable of preserving all the force of his practice. Developed by SB\Design under the creative direction of Sandro Bianco, the project consisted of the complete conception of the artist's book, bringing together art direction, editorial design, information architecture, visual curation, graphic production, and print supervision to create a publication that transcends documentary function and becomes integrated into Gabriel Wickbold's artistic universe itself.
Throughout his trajectory, Gabriel Wickbold has built an authorial language recognized by iconic series investigating themes such as identity, human behavior, nature, technology, spirituality, and transformation. Each series presents its own aesthetic, combining photography, painting, physical intervention, light, color, and matter to create images that challenge the boundaries between contemporary art and photography. SB\Design's challenge was not merely to reproduce these images with fidelity, but to construct an editorial narrative capable of establishing relationships between different series, controlling reading rhythm, and transforming each page turn into a new visual experience. The book was conceived as an extension of the exhibition itself, where silence, scale, contrast, and composition assume fundamental roles in how the work is perceived.
The entire editorial project was developed from the premise that design should disappear so that art could occupy the full protagonism. The graphic architecture was reduced to the essential, privileging large areas of breathing space, full-page images, discrete typography, and an editorial structure capable of valorizing the visual force of the photographs without competing with them. This choice allowed each series to maintain its own identity while dialoguing naturally with the overall publication, creating a continuous, sophisticated, and carefully orchestrated reading. More than an art book, the publication transforms itself into a collectible editorial object, produced to preserve the chromatic intensity, deep blacks, textures, and details that characterize Gabriel Wickbold's work.
Under the creative direction of Sandro Bianco, SB\Design acted in all stages of project development, from editorial narrative conception to the definition of graphic finishes, material specification, print supervision, and construction of the book's physical experience. The result is a publication that not only documents one of the most relevant productions in Brazilian contemporary photography and art, but amplifies its perception, bringing the reader closer to the experience found in a gallery or museum. More than recording an artist, the project demonstrates how editorial design can act as a curatorial tool, transforming visual information into narrative, organizing complex content, and creating a reading experience capable of transcending time.
